Contact : François Specq

This lecture will focus on novels that explore different facets of democratic republican politics in the post-Civil War United States : Henry Adams’s Democracy provides an ironic insider’s view of a corrupt political system ; Albion Tourgée’s novels explore the complexities of race and reconstruction ; and Charles Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition presents the breakdown of civic order and the rise of white supremacism in North Carolina.
