Alessandro LUDOVICO : « Tactical Publishing, Using Senses, Software, and Archives in the Twenty-First Century »

On February 19 at 11:00 we’ll be delighted to welcome Alessandro LUDOVICO, Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, media theorist, writer, curator, and artist working at the intersection of art, technology, and society. He is best known as the editor-in-chief of Neural, the influential international magazine dedicated to new media art, hacktivism, and digital culture, which he has led since the early 1990s. He also published Post-Digital Print – The Mutation of Publishing since 1894 (Onomatopee, 2012).
In this talk, Alessandro Ludovico will present his latest book, Tactical Publishing : Using Senses, Software, and Archives in the Twenty-First Century (MIT Press, 2023) where he proposes an alternative publishing system—one that transcends the dichotomy between paper and digital media, and instead combines sensory experience, software, and archival practices in new ways.

This talk is part of the launch of the new TANDEM AVČR - CNRS, entitled "Paper Bonds : Bookmaking for Kin, Friends and the Self in Contemporary Europe and the Middle East".

Le 19 février 2026 à 11h, nous serons ravies d’accueillir au CEFRES Alessandro Ludovico, enseignant à l’Université de Southampton, théoricien des médias, écrivain, commissaire d’exposition et artiste dont le travail se situe à la croisée des arts, des technologies et de la société. Il est surtout connu comme rédacteur en chef de Neural, un influent magazine international consacré à l’art des nouveaux médias, au hacktivisme et à la culture numérique, qu’il dirige depuis le début des années 1990. Il a aussi publié Post-Digital Print – The Mutation of Publishing since 1894 (Eindhoven, Onomatopee, 2012), traduit en français en 2016.
À l’occasion de cette conférence, Alessandro Ludovico présentera son dernier ouvrage, Tactical Publishing : Using Senses, Software, and Archives in the Twenty-First Century (MIT Press, 2023), dans lequel il propose un système d’édition alternatif, qui transcende la dichotomie entre supports papier et numériques et combine, au contraire, expérience sensorielle, logiciel et pratiques archivistiques de manière inédite.

Cette conférence s’inscrit dans le cadre du lancement du nouveau projet TANDEM AVČR - CNRS, intitulé « Liens de papier : Créer des livres pour la famille, les amis et soi-même en Europe et au Moyen-Orient ».

The project explores self-made books and private bookmaking practices in contemporary Europe and the Middle East, focusing on their material, symbolic and social dimensions. Adopting a genealogical perspective, it examines how non-commercial publishing and book production shape relationships, express identity and responds to political and technological change. Drawing from the disciplines of anthropology, book history and sociology of literature, the project aims to reappraise the social significance of the print book in the era of digital publishing.

Le projet explore les livres artisanaux et les pratiques privées de fabrication de livres dans l’Europe et le Moyen-Orient contemporains, en mettant l’accent sur leurs dimensions matérielles, symboliques et sociales. Adoptant une perspective généalogique, il examine comment l’édition non commerciale et la production de livres structurent les relations, permettent aux identités de s’exprimer et répondent aux changements politiques et technologiques. S’appuyant sur les disciplines de l’anthropologie, de l’histoire du livre et de la sociologie de la littérature, le projet vise à réévaluer l’importance sociale du livre imprimé à l’ère de l’édition numérique.
