For a long time, cognitive philosophy has converged with more ancient approaches in philosophy on the idea that social cognition is a matter either of theorizing about other people’s mental states or of simulating them, at best a mixture of both. This alternative is in fact based on the widespread assumption that mental states are internal, first-person and private. This dominating alternative has nevertheless started to be challenged recently by some scientists and philosophers arguing that the way we interact with others is permeated with a rich array of culturally shared and maintained beliefs and norms.

The overarching goal of THE CULTURAL EMBEDDING OF SOCIAL COGNITION research operation is to push this new line of investigation towards the development a more complex and integrative theoretical framework in which the full and authentic nature of the cultural dimension of social cognition finds its due place.

The specific goal of the Workshop is to examine the relevance to this development of the Predictive Processing and Active Inference framework, through an interdisciplinary dialogue involving cognitive scientists, modelers, and philosophers. It follows up on a previous Workshop held on March 30 2024 at East China Normal University that concentrated on the examination of the relevance of the neurocognitive and phenomenological approaches to social cognition. THE CULTURAL EMBEDDING OF SOCIAL COGNITION
Research Project is a 2 year project initiated in 2022 and funded by the Joint Research Institute for Science & Society (JoRISS), a without walls and multidisciplinary research platform developed by the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the East China Normal University since 2010. It is carried out in close interaction with the Knowl edge and Action Lab (KAL), a long term JoRISS Research Project in Philosophy launched in 2011.
