The Publication of Bayle and the Origins of Hume’s Philosophy : The Mackie–Johnson Correspondence

This volume presents, for the first time, the correspondence between Charles Mackie, Professor of Universal History at the University of Edinburgh, and Thomas Johnson, a Scottish-born bookseller and publisher operating from The Hague and Rotterdam, together with letters from John Mitchell and Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck. In an appendix, the editors publish the correspondence between Johnson and Pierre Des Maizeaux, Bayle’s first biographer, and excerpts from the Des Maizeaux–La Motte exchange. A substantial introduction reconstructs the Scottish-Dutch intellectual network that sustained the circulation of books and ideas between Holland and Scotland in the early eighteenth century, with particular attention to Johnson’s most ambitious publishing venture : the four-volume folio edition of Pierre Bayle’s Œuvres diverses (1727–1731).
